We’re Better Together – Join The Visual Church Media Facebook Group

$

Community is such an important thing to us at CMG. Some of our best ideas and designs have come from times of collaboration. Great things happen when people come together!

We understand that not every church has a full team of people serving in media. In fact, we’ve discovered that most tech teams are made up of only one or two dedicated individuals.

We feel that no one should have to figure out church media alone.

Knowing how much value there is in community, we started to dream of a place where church media techs could come together with others serving in this area of ministry. This spot would make it easy to share ideas and ask questions. More importantly, it would be an area where you could celebrate wins and learn from each other’s mistakes.

After brainstorming some of the best ways to connect people with a similar mission, we decided that a Facebook Group would be perfect. From there, we launched the Visual Church Media Group, and it’s quickly grown to a thriving community of over 12,000 members!

This group is perfect for…

• Connecting with others in the church media space
• Asking questions and helping others improve their media
• Showing off the positive things happening in your church

If you’re looking for a great way to connect with others, join our group and say hi!

Choosing The Perfect Worship Slide Font Size

$
0
0

Picking the perfect font size for displaying lyrics in your worship space can be challenging. Because each environment and screen are different, there is no easy, go-to answer that applies to all churches. However, there are some principles that will set you up for success.

The key to choosing the right font size is to avoid going so small that your audience cannot read it, while not going so large that it breaks up the lyrics in unnatural places. It’s all about finding that happy medium where your audience can easily read the lyrics in a flow that feels natural to the song.

Ideally, you want to choose a size that is easily legible when viewed from any area of your room.

Some other key points to consider when choosing your font size are:

  • Find the smallest font size that is comfortably legible from the back of your room. There is no need to use oversized text if not completely necessary. Large type is overpowering and gives the impression that you are yelling at your community.
  • It is preferable to have more of the background (or negative space) showing than to fill the whole screen with text. Use those backgrounds for all they’re worth!
  • Too small of a font can lead to less crowd participation. When a word is small and difficult to read, the human mind perceives it as less important.

It cannot be stressed enough to keep a consistent font size throughout your presentation and especially within one song. As you switch between slides, the size of your text should remain the same. Using different font sizes can break the visual consistency.

The environment in which you are projecting will also have an influence on the font size you choose. For example, a long narrow room with small screens will require a larger font, while a cinema theater with large screens in a relatively shallow space will require a smaller font.

When Working With Small Screens

If your environment has an undersized screen in relation to your room size, such as a TV, you might have a problem with your text being too small.

A few ideas to help allow for larger text are:

  • Break up lines of text at natural points and put less text on the screen at a time
  • Decrease the tracking (letter spacing) of your text
  • Use a narrower font, such as Bebas Neue or Steelfish

Choosing The Perfect Amount of Lines For Your Worship Lyric Slides

$
0
0

Worship lyric slides are an important element of church media. Their primary purpose is to prompt your community when singing songs. These lyrics should feel like they belong on your screen with readable text that is accurate and timely. When done well, this can help your community worship God.

One of the most frequent areas of confusion for lyric slides is how many lines of text should be on each slide.

For starters, don’t be lazy and put an entire song on your screen at one time. Two to three lines of text is a balanced choice when determining how many lines should be presented on a single worship slide. Using two to three lines is ideal because it leaves the screen uncluttered and easy for your community to find their place whether they are familiar with the song or not. Like everything else in your presentation, you want every line of text to be easy to find, clearly readable and not crowded in any way.

The maximum number of lines per worship lyric slide is four. Exceeding this number puts too much text on your screen at one time and makes it difficult for your community to find their place. If the lines of text are very short, then having four lines is a reasonable choice. In most cases stay within three or fewer lines of text.

What About IMAG?

If you are using lyrics over IMAG, it is common practice to use only one or two lines of text when presenting lyrics. Fewer lines of text take up less screen real estate and make it easier for your community to find their place during times of worship. Although, projection operators will need to advance to the next slide more often as the number of lines of text decreases per slide.

Song Tempo

The tempo of a song will also influence the number of lines you choose to present at one time. It is good practice to place more lines of text on your slides for faster songs and fewer lines of text for slower songs.

Another View

An alternative school of thought believes that presenting more lines of text on your screen at one time will help your community see the story in a song and give more time to meditate on its words. When an audience only sees small portions of a song at one time, they may be less likely to appreciate the full narrative of the song. This is something to consider when choosing how many lines of text to project per slide. For more contemplative and reflective songs you may consider increasing the number of lines of text on your screen if you think it is appropriate.

2016 has been a big year for bold design in church media. Gone are the days of motion backgrounds being made up of generic particles and boring, flowing lights. As churches become increasingly more creative and in touch with trends, the demand for higher quality motions keeps growing.

Some of the most popular design trends of the year have been represented in CMG Mega Packs. Here are the top three church media looks of 2016:

1. Colored Smoke Clouds

Colored Smoke Clouds

Bright, multicolored smoke makes a huge impression on your audience as it billows across your screens. This look pairs well with LED lighting and white lettering.

You can get this look in the March 2016 CMG Mega Pack.

2. Marbled Liquid Swirls

Marbled Liquid Swirls

Organic moving liquid shapes and natural textures create a marbled look that is truly unique. This style looks great on its own or can be paired with white boxes around your lyrics.

You can get this look in the June 2016 CMG Mega Pack.

3. Duotone Nature Scenes

Duotone Nature Scenes

This style features video taken from live nature scenes and pairs it with a unique color effect. It brings an organic, yet stylized look to your environment.

You can get this look in the July 2016 CMG Mega Pack.

4 Text Box Templates That Will Give Your Lyric Slides A Modern Look

$

0

One of the most popular new ways for churches to display song lyrics on their screens is with the use of text boxes. There are several variations of how this is done, but they each put a unique spin on the traditional lyric slide layout.

Many churches are choosing this look to give a more modern feel to their space, but there are other benefits, as well. Using boxes with your lyrics helps to separate the words from the background, making it easier to focus. Also, by using solid boxes, the lyrics become completely separated from the background which makes a bold, powerful effect.

Here are four box layouts to try out in your presentation software. If you’re a ProPresenter user, we’ve provided downloadable templates at the bottom of this post.

1. The White Border Box

2. The Solid Black Box

3. The Solid White Box

4. The Split White Box

The font used in each of these examples is Montserrat Bold, which is a great FREE alternative to the popular Gotham. Download here.

Avoid Moving Backgrounds With Continuous Linear Movement

Linear Continuous Movement = Distracting Moving Backgrounds

People will often state that moving backgrounds are distracting in worship and here is one reason why.

Not all moving backgrounds are created equal. Some of them are made in haste and not professionally designed for worship lyric projection.

One of the culprits is continuous linear movement. This is motion that moves in one direction at a constant speed. This can create a feeling of vertigo especially when something is spinning or moving upwards or downwards at a constant speed.

To fix this problem a motion should include properties of acceleration, deceleration or randomness. When sourcing new motions be on the look-out for this downfall.

3 Different Ways To Choose Motion Backgrounds For A Service

Subscribing to the CMG Mega Pack is one of the easiest ways to keep a steady stream of quality motion backgrounds coming into your church. These motions make it super simple to transform any screen and create a powerful atmosphere for worship.

Each pack includes over 10 coordinating motion and still backgrounds to use behind your worship lyrics, 3 announcement videos, and a 5-minute video countdown.

Since you’ll get a new Mega Pack delivered to your inbox on the first every month, over time you’ll accumulate a large library of motions for use at your church.

This gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes time to choose your backgrounds.

We’ve seen several methods for how our subscribers will choose which motions they’ll use each Sunday. Each of these methods has specific benefits and will give a unique look to your worship set.

Method 1: Choose From One Pack

Since you can count on getting fresh motions each month, many churches choose to use one Mega Pack exclusively for an entire service, entire month, or message series.

3 Different Ways To Choose Motion Backgrounds For A Service

This is the simplest way to ensure that your backgrounds match properly and stick to the same visual theme. Our packs are designed intentionally to support this easy method and will keep your services looking fresh and exciting all month long.

You can get these motion backgrounds in the September 2016 Mega Pack.

Method 2: Mix And Match From Different Packs

As your media library grows, you may decide to pull motions from multiple Mega Packs that work well together. We’ve seen many churches build a folder of their favorites from each month and use this as their condensed, on-the-fly collection.

3 Different Ways To Choose Motion Backgrounds For A Service

This method works particularly well when you have our Premium Yearly Subscription that gives you access to the entire CMG library of over 1000 backgrounds. As you mix and match from different packs, you may choose to use all random motions in a service or simply use a new pack every Sunday.

You can get these motion backgrounds in the September 2016, April 2016, January 2016, and October 2014 Mega Packs.

Method 3: Adjust Preferences To Create A New Pack

If you’re looking to get really creative with your motion selection, one option is to choose some of your favorite motions and give them a visual remix. By using your presentation software’s media controls, you can adjust things like hue and brightness or apply filters like blurs and vignettes.

3 Different Ways To Choose Motion Backgrounds For A Service

3 Different Ways To Choose Motion Backgrounds For A Service

With these simple tools, you can make several motions that normally wouldn’t be paired into a new set that works great together. Using this method, you can choose motions from nearly any Mega Pack to make up the visuals for your service.

You can get the motion backgrounds shown in this example in the August 2016, May 2016, January 2016, and September 2014 Mega Packs.

CMG Pro Layers are easy-to-use tools that will take your church’s presentations to the next level. They can be used on everything from worship lyrics to announcements to sermon slides.

By incorporating these images into templates inside of ProPresenter, you can quickly change the style of an entire presentation in a matter of seconds.

Here is a basic tutorial that walks you through this process step by step.

First, start by downloading the CMG Pro Layer for your church. You can find hundreds of these for free at CMG Create: Pro Layers.

template-1

In this case, we chose one of these white paint strokes to use with worship lyrics.

template-2

Then, open ProPresenter. For this tutorial, we used version 6.1 and opened the song Amazing Grace. Notice the standard formatting used on these slides using simple text.

Click Template in the top right corner.

template-3

Next, click New Template Group from the Template menu.

template-4

Then, name your new template a name fitting for the new style. Click Save.

template-5

After clicking save, the Template Editor will open. Click the Image icon and select the Pro Layer image that you’ve just downloaded. It will automatically be placed in your template.

template-6

When the Pro Layer image is selected, you can scale it to the size of your choice by dragging the corner blocks of the image. You can also move the image to wherever in the template you choose.

template-7

From there, click to add your text box. There are many options for text inside of templates (located on the toolbar on the right side of the interface). For this tutorial, we chose to make our text black to use over the white brush stroke Pro Layer.

template-8

Once you’re satisfied with your new template design, click the in the top left corner of the Template Editor to save.

template-9

With your desired presentation open (Amazing Grace in this case) click Template in the top right corner and select your new template design.

template-10

This will apply the chosen template to every slide in your song or presentation.

template-11

Each slide is still completely editable via Editor, so it’s easy to remove Pro Layers from any slides where they are not needed. In this case, we removed the brush stroke from the first slide.

template-12

template-13

Click the X in the top left corner to save your presentation for use.

8 Practical Ways Lyric Operators Can Prepare For Sundays

$
0
0

The role of a lyric operator in worship services is extremely important. You are so much more than a button pusher – you lead people in worship visually.

Providing lyrics for your church not only enables regular attendees to worship more freely, it allows newcomers to comfortably join in on the experience.

Here are a few ways that you can prepare during the week for this crucial role:

1. Add Every Service Element To Your Presentation Playlist

Having to hunt for each song, video, and presentation in the moment creates entirely too much stress. Add each part of your service to your playlist so that you can easily access them. Remember to include even the small details.

2. Outline Your Lyrics As They’re Sung

Ordering your lyrics in the exact way that they’ll be sung enables you to click to the next slide with confidence. Not having to worry about displaying the wrong words makes a big difference when you’re making an effort to display the next line before it’s sung.

3. Choose Your Backgrounds For Each Song

Determine which motion or still graphic you’ll use for each song ahead of time and add it to your presentation. This takes away the pressure of having to choose a background in the moment and removes the risk of selecting one that doesn’t match the tempo.

4. Double-Check Spelling And Grammar On All Slides

Typos stick out like a sore thumb for audiences members and distract for the entire duration of a song. Avoid the chuckles from your congregation by proofreading your slides ahead of time.

5. Listen To Your Worship Set All Week

This is an easy habit that everyone involved in worship should pick up. Create a playlist with your worship set for that weekend and listen to it throughout the week. By the time Sunday comes, you’ll already know the songs by heart.

6. Touch Base With Other Ministry Leaders

An obvious sign of unprofessionalism is different areas of an organization not being on the same page. Take time during the week to connect with your worship leader, speaking pastor, lighting tech, and sound engineer to ensure you’re all telling one unified story on Sunday.

7. Test Everything Before Service Begins

There is potential for error in every area of your role. Take time before service starts to test each piece of media and presentation that will be used. When you’re confident that everything is in tip-top shape, you’ll move through each service element stress-free.

8. Pray For God To Do Big Things

Want to know how to give your production team an edge? Pray. Ask God to use you in the service to do more than simply project lyrics. Ask for Him to help you to create a distraction-free environment for life-change.

ProPresenter
is a powerful presentation software platform created specifically for use in churches. It’s used primarily for displaying song lyrics, Bible verses, and videos. While this program is simple to use, it is loaded with features that sometimes get overlooked by most users.

Few ProPresenter users know that there are shape tools built right in to the Editor that you can use on your slides. Though these tools are limited, you can get really creative with the options provided.

We were able to create three great looks for our lyrics slides using only the tools provided in the software. No outside software, apps, or images were needed to for this. Since they came out so well, we wanted to make a tutorial video that shows how you can create them for your church, as well.

20 Lyric Slide Designs That Will Inspire Your Creativity

$

Looking to bring some excitement to your church’s lyric slides? So were we.

Churches have been projecting worship lyrics for well over a decade now, yet we’ve noticed that many have kept the same traditional look that they started with years ago. Sure, plain text over a background gets the job done, but what if we got more creative?

We decided to attempt to create some of the most unique looks we could imagine using practical tools that are available to most churches. We started with motion backgrounds from several of our CMG Mega Packs. Then, we added a variety of fonts, shapes, and textures. Many of these resources are available for free from CMG Create.

Our hope in sharing these designs is not necessarily for you to use these in your churches, but to be inspired. Some of these designs are over the top – even for us. But, we do think they could be a starting point for your next slide layout or at least begin a conversation toward more creative slides.

Check out these 20 lyric slide designs to get some fresh inspiration:

Motion backgrounds are the best way to bring new life to your church’s screens. Our CMG Mega Packs not only make it affordable to create a great look, they make it super easy.

One of the greatest advantages of being a long-time CMG subscriber is accumulating a large library of these monthly packs of motions. Even more, Premium Subscribers have 24/7 access to the entire CMG library of backgrounds, including all of the past packs.

While each Mega Pack is designed to keep your screens looking fresh for an entire month, we know that many of our users like to get extra creative. One way that you can mix it up is by combining motions from different packs.

You’ll notice that many motion packs in the CMG library work well together. Here are some of our favorite combinations that you should try in your services:
