Media Drive Interface Speed Comparison

Sometimes you need to store your church media files on an external hard drive. This can be helpful when you travel a lot, are transferring files between different machines or when your computer’s hard drive is full and you don’t have any room to hold your large library of media.

I have created a list demonstrating that not all connection interfaces are created equal. Always choose the fastest connection possible so your media is never slowed down by slow read or write speeds. Here is a list of the most common interfaces and their connection speeds:

20,480 Mb/s - Thunderbolt 2
10,240 Mb/s – Thunderbolt
10,240 Mb/s – USB 3.1
5120 Mb/s – USB 3.0
800 Mb/s – Firewire 800
600 Mb/s – SATA III
400 Mb/s – Firewire 400
300 Mb/s – SATA II
150 Mb/s – SATA I
60 Mb/s – USB 2.0
12 Mb/s – USB 1.1

I recommend a SSD drive to hold your data and connected to your computer using USB 3 or Thunderbolt.
