Have you ever wondered where everyone on your MailChimp email list is located? Here are step-by-step instructions on how to plot the location, using latitude and longitude data, of your email list subscribers on a Google Map. All you will need is a MailChimp email list, spreadsheet program and a Google Drive account.
Instructions to Plot a MailChimp Email List on Google Maps
- Login into MailChimp and view the subscriber list you would like to plot on Google Maps.
- Click the “Download” link beside “View Subscribed” and “Segment”.
- Open the downloaded file (.CSV) in Microsoft Excel or Numbers.
- Delete all columns except the “Latitude” and “Longitude” columns and trim the spreadsheet so it just includes those two columns.
- Export the file as a .CSV (Unicode UTF-8).
- Create a Fusion Table, in Google Drive, using the new .CSV file you just exported from your spreadsheet program.
- On the “Import New Table” screen, click the next button twice and then the finish button. Your data will be imported into a Fusion Table.
- Your map is now ready to view. To access it, click the link in the tab that say “Map(… name of map…)”. This link is beside the “Rows1″ and “Cards1″ tabs.
MailChimp Location Data Accuracy
MailChimp makes this note about their location data: “Although data about country location is accurate, and state level data is usually pretty accurate, detailed local data can sometimes be inaccurate due to how ISPs handle IP addresses.”
