This is the big question on everyones mind, “is it safe to install Apple OS X Yosemite to run ProPresenter 5?” And the big answer is… maybe.

Some people have had success running ProPresenter on Yosemite while others haven’t. Right now it is a shot in the dark to whether or not it will work well for you. My suggestion is don’t upgrade. If everything is running smoothly on your production computer than why risk upgrading and having problems in the future? Stick to running ProPresenter 4 and 5 on OS X Mavericks and keep that smile on your face.

If you do want to make the plunge and install ProPresenter 5 on Yosemite here are some known issues users are having:

  • DVD playback (fixed in ProPresenter 5.3.0)
  • Video lag, glitchy playback, stuttering and freezing
  • Missing UI buttons such as no exit buttons in the Media Properties box (fixed in ProPresenter 5.3.0)
  • Changing video effects like hue, saturation, contrast and brightness doesn’t show up in preview window. Reset button doesn’t work either
  • Frequent crashes and freezing under normal conditions
  • Slow program performance such as one second delays when switching backgrounds and playlists
  • Dante Virtual Soundcard is not supported (now supported by Yosemite 10.10)
  • Option+Enter to make a new slide from a paragraph cuts out random words and doesn’t do what its supposed too
  • Bluetooth connection problems (Yosemite problem)

As I’m writing this ProPresenter 5 is version 5.2.9 and OS X Yosemite is 10.10.1. Hopefully in the not so distant future all of these issues will be fixed.

As for ProPresenter 4 and Yosemite there seems to be some major problems and it is advised that you don’t upgrade.

What has your experience been like running ProPresenter 5 on OS X Yosemite?

“What you missed is the reason we are being pressured to upgrade. Apple has really bitten everyone who actually uses their Macs for useful work in that the current versions of iWork ONLY run on the latest OS. This is the second time we’ve been force to upgrade an OS to get the latest iWork and its getting old. Now that Christmas services are done I brought the machine home and I’m moving forward with the upgrade. The hoops we jump through each Sunday to convert Keynote files to be compatible with the production computer gets old.” ~Chris G.

Like you said, it’s a shot in the dark…some users love Yosemite and others have had their computers ruined from it. There are considerations besides Pro5 and Yosemite compatibility…I thought the older the computer, the higher the risk, but I just saw a brand new computer replaced by apple because the first Yosemite file ruined the computer. I agree that if everything is running great on Mavericks, it’s fine to stay there. I will probably move to Yosemite (or whatever comes next) when our production computers are replaced in the future and come loaded with the newer OS. Whatever you do, whether you upgrade or not, backup your files on a regular basis.” ~Courtney M.
